OTHER COMMENTS :

What activities support development of emergent literacy skills?

  1. Participation, repetition, and conversation about books
  2. Are there dialogic activities with preschool audiences?
  3. Does the librarian/library assistant tell the title, author and illustrator of the books that are read?
  4. Other Suggestions:

Note: What’s “dialogic” reading? It’s basically a conversation an adult has about a book with a child. Here’s some more information about it http://www.readingrockets.org/article.php?ID=431 and ways to include some of these techniques in your storytime.

While everyone's presentation style is different, all presentations should include certain criteria. We too have various levels of staff presenting storytimes. Some of the criteria I look at are: 1. Interacts well with audience 2. Able to hold audience's attention 3. Smiles 4. Makes eye contact 5. Uses age appropriate materials in presentation 5. Uses a variety of formats in presentation (example:big books, flannel boards, finger plays, movement activities, music, etc...) 6. Provides a bibliography 7. Is prepared 8. Greets attendees as they enter and mingles and interacts during craft activity Hope this helps. Bianca
I am just getting started with preschool storytimes. I was a preschool teacher for several years, but sharing stories with children I don't know very well (or at all) is different. I work with a lot of great storytellers at my library who have given me many tips. The storytime evaluation gives me some more things to think about as I am planning my storytime. Thanks.
